I'm certainly no expert since I've never seen a real one. However from looking through some of my references it looks good. Are you planning to sell it if so how much? Regards Jim
This patch is pasted on an album of a soldier from Sonderverband 288. I acquired this album with another (several photos of patches being worn, and also insignia on vehicles, etc.) for a friend. Because it is pasted on the album, it is very difficult to take a photo of the reverse. It doesn't glow under blacklight, but also pretty well reserved (or fairly new-looking ).
Because I know little of 288 patches I cannot give you a firm answer, but I will ask a friend who is very knowledgeable about these. My first impression is not good. The one pictured in Dal McGuirk's book 'Rommel's Army in Africa,' is a reproduction, and the only thing illustrated in the book that isn't authentic. Dal did not realize the patch was a repro, or he would have never included it.
Thanks John, I would appreciate your help! Even the patch is not a wartime one ( I assumed postwar when I bought it), it does not hurt my friend, because it is just a plus. Photos are very good and definitely from one man.
I beleive this patch is original. I have an identical one in my collection which is 100% rayon manufacture.
There are reproductions of this patch which were done on a Khaki backing which is incorrect. Originals are known only on a dark green or field grey base cloth.
One important detail to look for on these patches is the horizonatal lines below the radiant son. The lines are made up of yellow and grey thread. I have only seen this detail on original patches.
The Sonderverban 287 / 288 patch is very rare and the last one I saw for sale at auction went for over $450.
I too believe you've got an original patch. Since another original has been shown I won't post a photo of yet another in a friend's collection that is identical to yours however I can post a photo of the common fake that I believe "Globe Militaria" was selling some years back for very little money (which should have been a red flag of huge proportions).
Note how the fake has a tan background and the swastika is misshapped. There are other differences but these two jump out at you.
Glad you saw this. Like I said, I have no experience with these, and your help was needed. Akira, sorry for giving you a bad first impression, but I have seen excellent reproductions of these, far better than the one Ralph posted. Ralph the repros at the larger shows are superb. When I look at polux's patch I can see that it looks good and just like Akira's. Akira's photo is so light it doesn't have the same look and that is why I was concerned. Glad it turned out good as I have not heard back from my friend. Akira, please do tell us about the photo!
Hello guys, thank you very much for your comments, I really appreciate it! John, absoluuutely no problem!
I have no weekend this week... got busier again. I will post some more images in coming days, unfortunately no more patch-in-wear photo in an album that I can post images from, but some interesting images I can show you nevertheless!
