Vet bring back SS officer eagles

Recently, I added a posting to a thread about an image of an SS soldier who was a prisoner of Tito's partisan's in Italy in 1945. Several members contacted me asking what sort of SS items were picked up by New Zealand soldiers at this time.

My reply was, I would dig some of them out and post an image or two when I got a chance to do it. Today I have found some of the eagles and I thought, why not have a challenge for those in the know

In the following images posted for me by "ebony" there are 6 x SS officer sleeve eagles ( front and back ) which came from the following sources

    - New Zealand soldier brought back from Trieste 1945
    - New Zealand soldier brought back from the advance into Austria 1945
    - Obtained directly from the SS officers after May 1945, know name & unit
    - Purchased from a local auction site

Five of these SS officer eagles came directly from the hands of the returned NZ soldiers who brought them back or from the SS officer who wore that eagle on his tunic during the war. These 5 are 101% original and made before May 1945.

I am however, very suspect of the one I got from the local auction site and believe that it may in fact be an excellent reproduction. In my opinion this one has every chance of being a reproduction.

Lets see who amongst us can pick the potential reproduction ???

Otherwise enjoy the other 5 for what they are,
"a piece of history that was really there"

    Chris

I have been asked for some back-round about these. Below is what I posted in the thread about the captured SS soldier. Can add a lot more about this period of history but thought it best to let you guys judge the items rather than the story at this stage ,

This is an absolutely fascinating piece of history and many reading this may not realise that the New Zealand troops put up the first wall in what was to become the "Cold War" and divided Trieste into east and west between Titos communist partisians, Mihailovich's Chetnik partisians, Italian partisians and 2nd NZEF for the allies of the free world. "A political volcano" which was Trieste at that time.

In one publication is a detailed account of the surrender to the 2nd NZEF of various SS and Police units plus sadly their systematic murder after they were then handed over to Titos forces as part of the agreement regarding the division of the city. A decision to this day that many who were there still question the wisdom of. They did after all surrender to the New Zealanders and were technically their prisoners of war. Also keep in mind that the SS had not been declared an illegal organisation at that stage and was still a legitimate German unit. The other publication has a complete listing of all SS units encountered, overun or taken prisoner by the New Zealanders at that time. Something I have been after for a long time.

These publications combined with the information from SS Militaria & documents brought back by the NZ veterans and where found has given me real insight into the supply centers/ logistics of SS troops fighting in Northern Italy in 1945

I can not express enough thanks to those returned NZ soldiers who found it in their hearts to document this tragic story/ experiences before it was gone forever.

p.s. the SS soldier in the photo has every reason to be worried when you read how they were being killed. It was just not Tito's men, although the youth units of his forces were the worst with their deliberate slow method designed to drag it out for as long as possible so the individual being done in could suffer as much as was possible. The Italians partisans were equally as feared by any SS soldier at the time but with them death at least came quicker.
