Just a passing thought, I know it's illegal for these men to where the crosses with swastikas on them, but I wonder how many still have there original issued knights crosses at home. Anyone know or have communicated with any holders of the knights cross and know anything about this ? Or did alot get rid of them at the very end so as to not be identified with any special deeds against the enemy ?

This is the group photo from this years OdR JHV Meeting which has just taken place in Germany.
I have been to the meeting many times and know some of the RKT's personally , many of them still have their original awards including their Knights Crosses. As has been said they are not allowed to wear the originals but quite often they have them with them.
I have also visited many RKT's some of whom still have all their original medals however many of them had all their awards " Liberated " when they were captured or surrendered which is quite a sore point with some of them.

Paul

Not all of them are RKT Some of the guys in the photo are EK and DKiG Winners , many of them are over 90 years old the oldest is the guy in the Brown suit Achim Wunderlich who is 95 , to his left is the famous infantry Swords winner Waldermar von Gazen.
In the photo there are 11 infantry , 6 Luftwaffe, 1 Fallschirmjager,1 Fallschirmjager Sturmgeschutz , 2 Schwere Panzer Jager, 1 Panzer,1 Sturmgeschutz , 1 Waffen SS.
Many of them have had books or bios done on them or feature in unit histories but this isn't done in the same coordinated way it has been done in the US or UK.

Of course many do not wish to remember this time, so in that regard I guess it's okay.
