L/11 Black wound badges whats fake and not ?

The brass badge pictured on the left of the scan, I've had for 16 years one of the first packeted wound badges I ever bought. When on posting the hinge on another thread, Chris V our resident expert and main man on wound badges had some dubious thoughts on these brass ones with the type of hinge I'll show in seperate pic's.

I can see differences in the brass and steel badge, but I thought that of no real consequence. More so in the pimpled background area behind the helmet, there are minor differences in the berries in the wreath and sword guards (hilt or what the darn things are called)

What makes it a possible fake though ? The differences you could account for perhaps in the metals and mold, the hinge set up though...what makes this undesirable compared to the other L/11 WB's ???

    Any thoughts ?

Chris buddy, can you explan to this novice on awards

                Hi Marcus,

I am sure if I say anything out of order here, Chris V. will scold me .
I have to say that I have never ever seen that type of hinge on any badge, let alone wound badges. That being said, since it is brass, marks it as a pre-1942 award (which you probably already know). Some interesting hinge and clasp variations can be found on the early ones. On some of the early examples, it appears that manufacturers used up any left over stock from the previous war until depleted, then the "standard" type of hinge and clasp came into being. E.S.P. even used zinc in the production of black wb's which included WW I style pins and catches, and 1936 style hinges (making it impossible to tell if early or late production). I would not dismiss it though, as we all know, sometimes the unusual or out of place sometimes proves to be just as good as the other types. One thing that I am surprised to see missing from both of the badges is the berry nearest the bottom portion of the hilts of the swords in the wreath. This maker was to my knowledge, the only one to incorporate the "extra' berries in their design. This may have only been on the silver and gold grades though. Sorry no definites...just my thoughts.

                  Hi Steven,

Thank you for the reply , out of interest I thought you may like to see these pic's of hinges.

Apart from these two pic's this type of hinge is also evident on the L/61 IAB (Just sold mine) and a GAB that comes to mind, aslo of course the EK, KVK and Spanish Cross examples known in silver and bronze.

Here's my Spanish Cross hinge, there;s documented evidence I think that suggests this to be the maker Peltz & Lorenz.

Very interesting, I have to say that I have never seen this type before, but then again my badge collecting is tightly focused in the wb area...still on the wb, a first. Thanks for the pics.

Skips EK, again I'd imagine Peltz & Lorenz though and not Deumer though

I'd be glad to look, but I must humbly say that I consider myself an "expert in the making", and bow respectfully to Chris' knowledge. (for now)
