For information on the modern Malta and Johanniter orders, here are their web sites:

Sovereign Order of Malta (Catholic): http://www.orderofmalta.org

Johanniterorden: http://www.johanniter.de (current Herrenmeister Dr. Oskar Prinz von Preussen)

And some other versions of the order:

Most Venerable Order of St John in the British Realm: http://www.saintjohn.org/

Johanniter Order in the Netherlands: http://www.johanniterorde.nl/

              Johanniter Order in Sweden: http://www.johanniterorden.se/

The British Venerable Order used to be a Protestant order, but is now ecumenical, taking both Protestants and Catholic. I have an acquantance who is a member of both!

Thanks for the website listings, I'd gone through most of them, especially the Johanniter-specific ones, as I am looking for information about my cross.

The problem with the J-specific ones though is they're 1) mostly all in a language I can't understand...I have to brush up on my european languages 2) They ones I could understand don't have case-studies or specific stories of people who have been awarded the cross. I have a named cross and am trying to work out whether there is a complete list of recipients and exactly how he got the blessed thing...Karl came the closest so far to a critiera: (I have modified his post a bit )

                • Protestant,
                • noble of at least Freiherr grade and a
                • Hauptmann/Kapitänlt. (active or of the reserve).

The order still exists, and runs hospitals and medical services and the like, and whereas one has to be a Protestant still, the other two requirements are waived nowadays, although high social standing is certainly still expected.
                • Not sure about the faith of my winner but it'd be a given I guess
                • My winner is a Von ... so presumably a noble
                • My winner reached Hauptmann during the second world war

Now what other things did he need to do?
