    Wehrpass Normandie(Carentan) 709 ID.

A wehrpass I found a couple of days ago. Hermann was born on 6 september 1921 in Mühlhausen. He served different Ersatz bataillonen till he was attached to the Pz.Jg.Abt. 42 of the 7th Panzer Division. With this division he fought on the eastern front from 06.02.1941 till he was wounded on 13.01.1942. After his recovery he served a couple of Pz.Jg.Ers. Bataillonen and he was attached on 30.01.1943 to the Panzerjäger Kompanie 709, a part of the 709 Infanterie Division. This division was situated since 1941 in Normandy(Contentin) and was heavily engaged on D-Day and the further combats in Normandy.

He left the Panzerjäger Kompanie 709 for a short time and he was attached to the Panzer-Regiment 100, the entry says he was in Carentan( I think for training/skills?)

      Entry:

      ? - 25.03.1943 Ausbildungs Lehrgang Pz ...
      I./Pz. Rgt. 100 - Carentan

He rejoined the 709 Infanterie Division and was promoted end 1943 in this division, last entries are from 1944.

The 709 ID. was situated on the north and east coast of the Contentin Peninsula on D-Day, defending against allied airborne landings and also against the US 4th Infantry Division landing on Utah beach. The division was later trapped in the Cotentin Peninsula and destroyed in the defense of Cherbourg. Generalleutnant Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben, the division and fortress commander, surrendered at Cherbourg on 26 June 1944.

More information about the panzerjager abteilung:

As it was organized on 1 May, the Panzerjäger Abteilung had 9 7,5 cm Pak 40 AT guns on tracked chassis.6 No deliveries of Marders have been found in the documents covering the period from May 1943 until D-Day.7 Either the SP AT guns were delivered before May 1943 or they are some kind of locally made conversion, possibly using captured French vehicles. The Panzerjäger Abteilung also had twelve 7,5 cm Pak 40 (mot Z) and nine 3,7 cm Flak guns (mot Z).8 The last elements of the abteilung were destroyed on 30 June 1944.
