All begin with this 3 tones camo gasmask found in a house in the east of Normandy. It has been found with other stuff :
Details of the 2 name paper tags which indicate the soldier was in the WH, then in the SS :
Born the 10th of january 1915, Fritz STEGER won the ritterkreuz le 15th of august 1940 when he was Leutnant der Reserve in the Infanterie-Regiment (motorisiert) 20 as Zugführer.
He was Hauptmann der Reserve when he went in the waffen-SS as SS-Hauptsturmführer.
The 14th of june 1944 he is the leader of the 3rd bataillon of the 25th regiment of the 12th SS-Panzer Division HJ. He succeed to the SS-Obersturmbannführer MILIUS who become leader of the 25th regiment (after the death of the SS-Brigadeführer Fritz WITT (killed by a shell of the Royal Navy)).
He fights in the north-west of CAEN, specially in the town of BURON.
Despite the attempt of reinforcement of panzers (he was connected with the ARDENNE abbey), the town fall after strong fights with the Canadian Scottish Regiment the 8th of july 1944.
Prisonner (he was declared killed to his wife who will have a letter from him some weeks after, when he was prisonner of war), he died the 20th of march 2003 in MUNICH.
