      Hello,

It would seem to me that the medal is an original German-made, wartime example in zinc. It still retains a nice bronze finish, which is unusual for these medals but not unheard of either. As far as the ribbon is concerned, I do not like it and believe it to be a modern replacement ribbon. I suppose it could be a Spanish-made ribbon, but I can say with certainty that it is not a German-made ribbon of the Third Reich Period.

      Best regards,
      Tom

I'm lead to believe by those who know that mine has the original German ribbon ..

        The ring is stamped '1'

        Cheers, Ian.

both medals are original pre 45. ribbon number one is not the typical German made ribbon but has a chance as stated as being a legit Spanish one. Ian- I'm sorry mate, your ribbon is a modern copy- look at the lack of edge loops...

Thanks Patrick ... I was told by the Spanish Legion on here it was original ... I had wondered about the edge weave myself but was re-assured otherwise.

            Ho hum

            Cheers, Ian.

Ian....the ribbon is Spanish manufacturing of replacement. The medal looks good, although it is difficult without having in hand.

              regards

I can only agree with the guys, both medals look good wartime pieces.

I´d bet that the first one came from the so called Deschler Hoard. None coming directly from the veterans keep this gilding finished. This is the reason why the ribbon is a modern one.

                      Hi guys,

Here is an example of a German-made medal and the proper, German-made wartime ribbon:

                      Best regards,
                      Tom

                      Here are the specs:

32.42mm in diameter and the rim thickness of the medal is 1.91mm (measured at the six-o'clock position) The weight is 13.4 grams.

The medals typically had a very thin color wash that fades away over time. Most of the medals that were actually awarded during the war are found pretty much void of finsh. They appear gray, bare zinc with only the slightest traces of color wash.

Here are a few closeups of an original German-made, wartime ribbon. As Patrick says, the original ribbons will have very distinct, looped edges. Notice how these edges have a scalloped look rather than being straight:

Here's my Deschler, with most part of its finish remaining.
Found with its ribbon and packet.
