My Great-Grandfather

I just recently received a letter from the Berlin archives containing info on my Urgroßvater. However, I have had some difficulty translating and finding info on his units, so if anyone would like to help me out i would really appreciate it.

1.11.44 he was WIA and paralysed and died in the Reserve Lazarett Königsber/Eastern Prussia 5.11.44

His rank was: Obergefreiter - Privat First Class

Burried in Apolda - registrated in the Registration Office (Standesamt) Apolda No 19/1945

It does NOT say he was wounded in action. It states that he sustained a fracture of the lower spine on the 28th Oct.44 which paralyzed him. It makes no mention of what the cause was.

Thanks Simon, That sounds correct because my grandmother told me it was a tree that caused his injuries and later death.

Any more info is welcomed!

Killed by a falling tree? Almost happened to me when i was in the army though luckily it hit my leg and not my back!

As he was trained as a pionier (engineer) i wonder if there's a link? perhaps he was involved in constructing bunkers or obstacles and was involved in an accident.

That sounds right Simon, that's basically what my grandmother said happened. They were building fortifications and a tree was being cut I believe, and they yelled for him to get out of the way but it was too late and it hit him.

Do you know of any more areas I could look into for further research? seeing that most of his docs were probably lost I will probably never know very much, but if anyone has any ideas let me know.

Sorry to revive a semi-old thread, but i got a few questions if someone would be kind enough to answer.

On the last page where it lists his transfer to 58th division there is a word "Einsatzraume" then a list of major battles.
Are these just battles the division to part in or he himself was in?

I was looking at the timeline and i was thinking it may be possible he was at memel. (58th and GD were trapped there if i am correct), then got wounded and was evacuated via ship to konigsburg.
