    EKII Deumer Pair - 1939 and 1957

I was lucky enough to purchase the medal on the right from a forum member a few weeks ago (thanks again) because something about the number on the ring, being '3', triggered something in my mind.

When I received the medal I checked the 1957 EKII versions that I had and noted the same number on one of them which I believe relates to Wilhelm Deumer of Ludenscheid.

    Both medals are shown below.

I had heard that Deumer EKII medals had a flaw in them on the 12 o'clock frame to left of the ring.

The flaw looks like a snake possibly caused by a gouge in the die.

    1957 Version

    1939 Version

The 1957 version shows the flaw quite distinctly while the 1939 medal flaw is not so apparent. It is there though and more visible to eye than the photo exists and has probably been worn away.

I'm pretty impressed by this as it looks like the two medals being made at least 12 years apart have the same characteristics. I think that the frames were probably struck at the same time and left over parts from 1945 used to make the 1957 version.

Also, the cores of both medals are magnetic.

Please, you opinions. Are these a matching pair of medals?

    Kindest Regards ...

        Hi,

Both crosses look fine to me. I have a set of 39/57 EK1s and the rims are also the same, except the 57 has dies flaws (same as for my Deumer 57 EK2). I've also typed some unmarked 57 EK2 & EK1 examples (both pinback and screwback) to Deumer using the flaws. Some frames may be 45 stock but I'd be surprised if they didn't fire up the dies again in 57-60 - Deumer seem to a fairly common manufacturer of EARLY 57 EKs.

The only real problem is that they are not my crosses

          Cheers.

            Thanks Peter, Mike and Blitz.

I have a few German medals and award badges but these two are my favorite.

I also checked my cased 1957 EK1 but the flaw wasn't there in the frame. Shall have to keep looking.

            Again, Thanks...

            Regards ...

A very nice pair you have, thanks for showing them. The die flaw and its progression are very interesting and something I did not know before.

                  Hi Junior,

The only photos that I know of persons wearing the 1957 Replacement Awards are found in the book called "The Iron Time" by Steve Previtera and published by Winidore press.

Chapters "The Bundeswehr Iron Cross" and "Visiting History" have photos of ex soldiers in Bundeswehr uniform or civilian clothing.

"The Iron Cross of 1939" by Gordon Willaimson also has a few pictures in his chapter "The 1957 "New Form" Order Of The Iron Cross".

                  No doubt there are others.

                  Regards ...
