Interesting.

I had always associated Deschler with high prices back in those days. High quality at a high price. But this one looks like a one piece of OK quality?

I dont say the piece is bad or anything, but it is a piece I would look at from every angle before I bought it.

Did that happen to come from a dealer that uses DR as his logo? I seem to recall a close up and wondered why the smashed part under the name, but that could just be the photo perhaps? Sorry to hear you needed an operation and heal fast.

Thanks for the comments and the questions are certainly legit. This piece came from a collector who did indeed purchase it from a well know, and somewhat expensive, dealer with the initials DR. I was able to purchase it for quite a bit less than its list price. At first examination, I too took this to be a one piece example and this raised red flags for me. However, on closer examination there is a visible seam around the edge of the frame, also it is possible to see where the inner corners are slightly raised from the iron core. As for the damage below and partially obscuring the maker name, I do not yet know what is scratched out there. I have sent DR and email asking if he has any knowledge of what would be inscribed in that place as the piece came round about from him. My digital scales are out of order, though I can tell you that this piece is significantly lighter than the traditional EKIs I have in my collection and seems to be observably thinner as well. I feel good about this piece, but I am always open to questions and observations, such things can only help sharpen us in our hobby.

Hi,

The images of the EK1 makes it look believable. It doesn't look one-piece either, as the inner beading appears to overlap the W in one corner. I assume that it is non-magnetic? I'd would like to see a pic with the pin down if possible Chris?

Re Deschler markings on EK1s, I didn't realise there were genuine examples marked this way - but live and learn! There are definitely a current batch of Deschler marked 1870 and 1914 (possibly also 1939) EK1 repros hitting eBay at present though.

Can we get a shot with the pin closed? There's a substantial number of fake EK1's in circulation marked Deschler und Sohn...... this one looks similar, although the marking is different and placed differently..... searching files now.

Greetings friends, sorry to be so long to reply, recovery from hospital takes its toll you know. The core of the cross is magnetic as would be expected. Here is a shot of the reverse straight on, I am sorry for the poor quality, if needs be, I will take one in natural light when the Good Lord turns the bulb on over here

Here is another which may provide better detail. I am, foolishly enough, not current on all the 1914 fakes out there. However, I the style of numberingi n the date here matches some aspects of a rather high end private purchase example I have (it came from one of the most reputable of forum members, so no questions there--p.s. he has responded in this thread

. Also, the pin and hook assembly seem in order, though we all know how easy it is to copy these characteristics. For clarification, this cross was offered on ebay for a while, I liked it, so I contacted the seller asking for information. He sent me photos of his collection and informed me that it had indeed been purchased about a year ago from DR. With that info and a good gut feeling, I purchased this cross from the seller. That is how this one came into my possession--it was certainly not purchased from Latvia or as a barn find

Interesting. I must say the thing that catches my eye right off the bat is the straighter than normal beading pattern. Almost appears like a second form Schinkle EK WW2 era.

I have never have seen that on 1914 EKs before.

Thats a great point raised by Darrell and my first thought when I saw the initial pick. The frame is the same as a type B schinkle. Also has the stippled core.
